Budget 2009-2010

Today at 11 am, pranab mukherjee presented the budget for FY 2009-10. In the budget, he has proposed to levy a service tax on the legal consultancy services provided by the commercial bodies (law firms) to other commercial bodies (companies etc). Thank fully, the services provided by the individual practicing lawyers to other individual litigants have been spared.

I being a lawyer, strongly believe that the tax on this noble profession is highly unjustified. In his speech, the Hon'ble Finance Minister mockingly stated that he differed in opinion on this with the previous FM (chidu, a lawyer himself). Chidu had abstained from imposing a service tax on this service as he believed that the services of a lawyer are not exactly 'services' per se. I would stand by chidu on this. Chidu understands that this profession is not exactly a commercial profession. Lawyers are the guardians of justice and assist people (whether individuals or commercial bodies) in fighting for their rights and against any injustice that may be done to them from the State.
